Install
Five steps. You only need to do this once.
On macOS 14 Sonoma you can skip steps 2 and 3: Control-click Copyable in Applications, choose Open, then click Open again.
System requirements
- macOS 14 Sonoma or later. Translation needs macOS 15 Sequoia or later.
- A Mac with Apple silicon or an Intel processor
- No internet connection needed to read text
Allow Screen Recording
To read the text in an area of your screen, Copyable needs permission to see the screen. macOS calls this Screen Recording. When Copyable asks, open System Settings and switch on Copyable.
Copyable looks at the screen only when you start a capture, reads only the area you select and doesn’t save the image. It makes no network requests.
To change it later, open System Settings → Privacy & Security → Screen & System Audio Recording (on macOS 14: Screen Recording) and switch Copyable on or off. If macOS offers to quit and reopen Copyable, let it.
On macOS 15 and later, the system reminds you every month that Copyable can see your screen and asks whether to keep allowing it. That reminder comes from macOS.
“Could not install” when you open the DMG
Newer versions of macOS offer to install an app straight from its disk image, and refuse when the app isn’t notarized by Apple: you see “Could not install. This Mac could not verify the app, so nothing was installed.” Click OK, then drag Copyable onto the Applications folder in the same window, and continue with step 2 above.
If Open Anyway doesn’t appear in Privacy & Security after you try to open Copyable, open Terminal, paste xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine /Applications/Copyable.app and press Return, then open Copyable again. This tells macOS you trust the app you just bought; it doesn’t change anything else.
If a capture doesn’t work
If Copyable says it can’t see the screen, or captures come out empty, check that Copyable is switched on under Screen Recording in System Settings. If it is, switch it off and on again, then quit and reopen Copyable.
Updates
The download link from your purchase always gives you the latest version. What changed in each one is in the changelog.
Uninstall
Quit Copyable from its menu bar icon, then move Copyable from Applications to the Trash. You can also remove it from the Screen Recording list in System Settings.
